Officer says he shot MP in self-defence

A police officer charged with the murder of a former MP now says he killed in self-defence.

Andrew Moeche Omwenga claims a woman officer, who was in the company of former Ainamoi MP David Kimutai Too, had an ill motive.

He told Justice David Maraga that police constable Eunice Chepkwony had checked two guns out of the armoury although she was off duty.

In his final submissions written by lawyer Gladys Ndeda, he said police who investigated the murder were not honest by claiming they had no knowledge of the policewoman possessing two guns.

Ndeda brought to the court’s attention an arms movement register, which she said had entries on the policewoman’s records tampered with.

Moeche is charged that on January 31, last year, at West Indies estate in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu District, he murdered David Kimutai Too and constable Eunice Chepkwony.

The court had earlier been told by the accused’s wife that Moeche and Chepkwony had a love affair after Chepkwony’s husband died.

Moeche said on the material day, Chepkwony approached him in the company of Too and provoked him before beckoning him to a deserted place where the killing took place.

He, however, told the court he had killed the two in self-defence after the MP attempted to shoot him.

State counsel had not filed their submissions by the time the case came up for hearing.

They are expected to file submissions by the end of the day. The court will deliver ruling on October 29.
