For one to be an accomplished boxer, he must have first taken part in the National Novices Championships as a start-up for a career in the ring.

To start that journey are young boxers who meet this morning at Kaloleni Social Hall in Nairobi on the first day of the National Novices Championships in the fight for top honours.

Several counties and institutional clubs are expected to send their boxers for the three-day competition as the first step of nurturing talents before passing them over to the National Intermediate Championships.

Several counties including Nakuru, Vihiga, Kajiado, Siaya, Kisumu, Mombasa and Kakamega confirmed sending their boxers for the event.

Over 200 teenage boxers are expected to showcase their talents here. Nairobi County Boxing Association Secretary General Musa Benjamin said his boxers are ready for the showpiece having had their selection trials last week.

"We had our trials last week and came up with some young potential boxers who are ready to box and must pass through the ranks before they take part in the league championships," he told Standard Sports.

Nakuru will also avail a number of their boxers according to the county chairman Isaac Mbote.

"We are parading a number of boxers from different clubs for the showpiece," he said.

Vihiga has six male and two female boxers training under three coaches.
