Ongare qualifies for Africa Boxing show

Commonwealth Games flyweight bronze medalist Christine Ongare has made the team to Africa Boxing Championships team set for January 2022 at a venue to be named by Africa Boxing Confederation (CAB) this month.

Ongare, who competes for Kenya Police, beat Lenca Akinyi of Nairobi County in the flyweight finals of the second leg of the Jamal Cup Championships at Grace Onyango Social Centre in Kisumu on Sunday.

She won the match after the referee stopped the contest in the first round of the flyweight championships. She has secured her slots for Africa Championships and World Women Boxing Championships set for Istanbul, Turkey, in March 2022 and Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England in July 2022.

“She has made it to the continental and global championships after winning her bout,” said Boxing Federation of Kenya Communications director Duncan Kuria.

Other female boxers who have secured their tickets to the continental championships are lightweight(57kg) Beatrice Akoth of Nairobi County, bantamweight (54kg) Amina Martha of Kibra and flyweight (48kg) Ann Wanjiru of Kongowea Boxing Club of Mombasa County.

In the finals, Akoth dismissed Perita Refa of Kenya Prisons on unanimous points decision, Amina also beat Alice Weiyego of Nairobi on unanimous points’ decision while Wanjiru stopped Emily Juma on RSC in the third round.
