Kenya registers mixed results in military championships

Commonwealth super-heavyweight boxing bronze medallist Fredrick Ramogi and welterweight (64kg) Chrispin Murimi registered crucial victories as Kenya registered mixed results in the ongoing 58th edition of the World Military Boxing Championships, in Russia.

Kenya also lost another two matches at the global championships that has attracted 36 countries from the six continents.

Onyango used his height advantage to effectively silence Ashish Duwadi of Nepal as Murimi secured a 4-1 win over Darlami Dan Bahadur of Nepal to bag semifinals slots.

As Murimi matched to the last four on unanimous points decision, flyweight (52kg) Kelvin Maina and heavyweight (91kg) Fredrick Onyango were not as lucky in their bouts.

Murimi overwhelmed the Nepalese to convince the judges, who awarded him a 4-1 victory of 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 28-29 and 30-27.

Murimi was set to face Abdulridha Waheed Karaawi of Iraq in the welterweight semifinals bout yesterday evening.

Flyweight (52kg) Kelvin Maina failed to go past the quarterfinals after losing to Juliano Fernando Maquina of Mozambique, who won the flyweight bout on unanimous points decision.

The Mozambican won the match 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 to scoop his semifinal ticket.

Onyango lost on split points decision to Erpelding Michel of Luxembourg in the quarterfinals of the heavyweight (91kg) bout. Yesterday, three Kenyans were expected to take the ring. 

They were flyweight Abednego Kyalo, featherweight Pauline Chege (51-57kg) and bantamweight Samuel Njau. 

Njau was to face Mordjane Oussama in the bantamweight (56kg) quarterfinal fight, light flyweight Abednego Kyalo was to take on Termirtus Zhussupov of Kazakistan in another quarterfinal match, while Chege was to face Bolortuui Tumurkhuyag of Mongolia.
