Former welterweight world boxing champion Carlos Baldomir was on Wednesday, July 31 handed an 18-year jail term by a court in Santa Fe.

This is after the Argentine was reported for repeated sexual abuse of his daughter.

According to the Buenos Aires Times, the 48-year-old was arrested in 2016 following allegations by his ex-wife that he had repeatedly abused his eight-year-old daughter between 2012 and 2014.

Three judges Pablo Busaniche, Rodolfo Mingarini and Susana Luna unanimously ruled for his conviction of “repeated sexual abuse of a minor”.

The sentence was made behind closed doors to protect the identity of the victim.

Prosecutors had hoped for a longer jail term for the accused but they will now have to go with the official ruling after more than 20 witnesses took to the stand to testify against the former boxer.

Baldomir had a successful boxing career which hit its peak on 2006 when he smashed the then welterweight champion Zab Judah, a title he held for some months before losing to undefeated Floyd Mayweather in a November 2006.

He retired in 2014 after a reasonable career. ?
