School Games: All eyes on Asumbi Girls ahead of Homa Bay County games in Mbita

As the Homa Bay County Secondary School Term Two Games kick off this week at Mbita High School, all attention is on Asumbi Girls High School, the Nyanza Region basketball 5x5 champions, who are looking to extend their dominance in the 3x3 format.
Grouped in Pool B alongside Wire and Osodo, Asumbi will be keen to replicate their Term One success where they qualified for the national finals in Mombasa.
Their recent performances have raised expectations, and they are being touted as early favourites to go all the way to the nationals once again.
In the basketball 3x3 girls’ competition, other teams expected to mount a strong challenge include Ogande Girls in Group A, Ototo in Group C and Samanga in Group D. However, the focus will remain on Asumbi, who have consistently dominated regional basketball in recent years.
In the boys’ 3x3 basketball games, Group A is stacked with talent, including Wire, Gethsemane, Gendia, and Ringa.
Group B features Homa Bay High, Agoro Sare, Mbita, and Kuoyo Kochia, while Group C has Oriwo, Orero, Ratanga, and Nyandiwa. Group D pits Tom Mboya, Mirogi, Tonga, and Ober together in what promises to be a tightly contested group.
A new football boys’ champion will be crowned this year after defending champions Agoro Sare and last year's finalists Tonga were eliminated early.
Surprise package Karabok High School caused the biggest upset by knocking out Agoro Sare in the Rachuonyo South Sub County games. Karabok now finds themselves in Group A alongside Gethsemane and Homa Bay High.
Group B features Mirogi, Mugendi, and God Marera, while Group C is headlined by Our Lady of Mercy Ringa Boys, who will face Tom Mboya and Paul Mboya. With the exit of big names, the football boys’ title race is wide open, and underdogs like Karabok are eager to cause more surprises.
In the girls’ football category, Bakita, Waondo, and Kobala are in Group A, while Group B has Sindo, Magina, and Repairer. Group C features Ogande, Atela, and Saye. Ogande Girls, who have been consistent in recent years, are considered the team to watch.
The volleyball action is also expected to thrill, with defending girls’ champions Asumbi grouped in Pool B with Miyuga and Dudi. Group A features Ogande, Nyamogo, and Saye, while Group C comprises Wasomo, Sindo, and Ogongo.
On the boys’ side, Group A has Gogo, Gethsemane, and Orero; Group B features Ringa, Agoro Sare, and Maranyona; and Group C includes Tom Mboya, Nyalkinyi, and God Bura.
In netball, Asumbi will again seek glory as they battle in Group C against Kobala and Gingo. Other groups include Group A with Lambwe, Magina, and Kakiimba, and Group B with Wiga, Orinde, and Agoro Sare Mixed.
Speaking ahead of the competition, Homa Bay County Secondary School Sports Association (HBCSSSA) chairman Bernard Ochieng assured all teams and stakeholders of top-level preparations both on and off the pitch.
“We have done everything possible to ensure a smooth competition. Security is in place, and we’ve communicated to all schools about discipline and sportsmanship. Mbita is ready to host all the athletes, and we expect clean, competitive games,” said Ochieng.
He also emphasized that the County Education Office and other key partners were fully involved to make the tournament a success, adding that the games are not only about winning but also about nurturing talent and building character among students.
