Asumbi Girls High School on Saturday was crowned the new Nyanza Region Secondary School basketball girls' champions after edging out Ng'iya Girls 48-40 in a highly competitive final played at St Joseph's Boys Rapogi in Migori County.

The Homa Bay County champions will represent Nyanza at the KSSSA national term one game finals set for Mombasa next month after defending champions Nyakach Girls from Kisumu failed to make it past the semifinals.

Nyakach won the title last year after Ng'iya who had won the final match was disqualified.

The Kisumu County champions finished second in Group A behind Ng'iya and face Asumbi who knocked them out in the semis while Ng'iya edged off Tuk Jowi from Migori in the second semifinal.

In handball, Manyatta from Migori successfully defended their title after narrowly edging out Kisumu County champions Maseno School 16-15.

Kadika Girls at the same time were crowned new handball girls champions after thrashing Nyamira Girls from Kisumu 22-13.
