Ng'iya Girls National School marked an impressive start to the Nyanza region Secondary School games on Wednesday afternoon, with a dominant display in their basketball opener as teams from various counties converging in Kisumu for the much-anticipated tournament.
Ng'iya Girls, the basketball titans from Siaya County, made a formidable start in their quest for the coveted ticket to the national term one games scheduled for next month in Machakos.
Ng'iya Girls showcased their basketball prowess by securing a decisive 63-31 victory over St. Barnabas in their opening Group B match at the Kisumu Girls basketball courts.
The team's dominant performance was evident from the outset, as they led 13-2 in the first quarter. Despite a spirited comeback by St. Barnabas in the second quarter, where they outscored Ng'iya 13-11, the Siaya champions managed to maintain a 24-15 lead by halftime.
The third quarter saw Ng'iya further solidify their lead with a 19-11 scoreline, and they concluded the match with a stunning 20-5 run in the fourth quarter, sealing their victory.
Ng'iya's triumph was not just a win but a statement of intent as they began their campaign to qualify for the national championships.
Post-match, Ng'iya Girls' basketball coach, Naftali Ambala, expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance and highlighted their focus on the remaining matches.
"Today's victory is a testament to our preparation and determination. We are focused on maintaining this momentum and securing our spot at the nationals," Ambala remarked.
Ng'iya Girls find themselves in Group B, competing alongside teams such as Sengera, St. Barnabas, and the defending champions Ototo, setting the stage for a fierce battle for the top spot.
In another match, Asumbi Girls defeated Mokomoni 56-7 in a Group A match opener played at Kisumu Boys.
Nyanza Region Secondary School Sports Association chairman George Oloo emphasized the importance of readiness to accommodate the high level of competition expected.
Speaking about the venues hosting this year's games - Kisumu Boys, Kisumu Girls, and Kisumu Day - Oloo said, "We've dedicated months of planning to ensure that our facilities meet the needs of the intense competition across all sports," he explained. "Our team has worked tirelessly to prepare the three venues, ensuring they are in top condition to host the athletes and the matches."
Oloo further highlighted the association's commitment to providing a platform for young talent to shine. "The Nyanza Region games have always been about more than just competition; they're a celebration of young talent and sportsmanship. This year, we've focused on creating an environment that not only challenges but also inspires our athletes to perform at their best."
On the subject of security and logistics for the event, George Osura, the Kisumu County Secondary School games Secretary, assured that all measures have been taken to ensure the safety of participants and spectators alike.
"The safety of our students, staff, and all attendees is our top priority. We've enhanced security measures at all venues and coordinated closely with local authorities to ensure a smooth and secure experience for everyone involved.
"As Team Kisumu, we're excited to host the games and we're looking forward to showcasing our hospitality and the competitive spirit of our teams. We believe this will be a memorable event for everyone involved," Osura expressed.
