National champs Dr Aggrey fire warning shots

National boys' basketball champions Dr Aggrey School are not showing any signs or relenting in their quest to defend their title.

The champions fired warning shots as the Taita Taveta County Secondary Schools Term One games begun yesterday.

Dr Aggrey, who are also the hosts of the county games, went on the rampage against Mwatate School, who they defeated 141-4.

Gift Fidel and captain Tong Ochol were unstoppable as they kept the opponent's ring busy in the entire game, dropping a combined 50 points in the match.

"This was a good start as we aim to retain the national title for the second year running," said Dr Aggrey's coach Kevin Maima.

"We surprised many people last year but we are stronger this year. In fact, we are better than we were last year and our target is now to bring the East African title home."

In their second match, Dr Aggrey humbled Voi Secondary 104-14.

Voi Secondary redeemed themselves with a 101-8 victory over Bishop Njenga School in another tie.

In girls' basketball, champions Mwasere secured a 64-10 win over Kivinda School.

The games enter Day Two today with the finals set for tomorrow, where the winners will qualify to represent the county at the Coast regional games slated for next month in Kwale county.

In Kilifi, the county secondary schools sports association chairman Cleophas Mudibo said the games taking place at Sokoke Boys High School will be used to tap, nurture and develop talents.

"It is my conviction that Kilifi county has abundant talent which is waiting to be tapped, nurtured and developed."

"My association has provided such opportunities for self-expression and actualisation so as to develop wholesome and responsible individuals as well as provide employment opportunities and careers, as such students should take advantage of these games," said the chairman.

Meanwhile, Mombasa county games will be held on March 27 at Shimo la Tewa High School and Shanzu Teachers Training College.
