KPA teams hold onto leads as basketball league takes a break

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men and women's basketball teams are where they would have wished to be.
Both sides moved top of their respective Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Premier League standings after picking up crucial wins over the weekend.
On Saturday, the defending women's league champions registered their sixth straight win of the 2022 season after thrashing Lady Bucks 72-15 in a one-sided match at Manyatta Arabs, in Kisumu.
Their male counterparts, who are also the defending champions in their league, were equally ruthless against Lakeside, defeating them 80-54.
The story was the same in Eldoret on Sunday where KPA women stretched their unbeaten run to seven games after seeing off Eldonets 77-26 at Uasin Gishu Grounds. Eldonets lost their sixth match out of the seven they have played so far.
KPA's shooting guard Jemimah Knight Omondi was at the centre of virtually everything for her side, scoring a game-high 19 points.
On the other hand, KPA men's team hammered Eldonets Platinum 72-57 to complete double victory for the coastal city teams.
Victory in Kisumu and Eldoret propelled the dockers to top of their respective standings as the KBF Leagues takes a two-week break ahead of the 2022 General Election.
KPA men lead with 13 points from six wins and one loss, while their female counterparts, who are unbeaten in their seven matches played so far, lead with 12 points.
It is these results that have given KPA women's head coach Anthony Ojukwu confidence to back his team to defend their Premier League title despite playing only seven matches early into the 2022 season.
Ojukwu expressed confidence with how the team has been playing so far.
"After the big win against Equity Hawks two weeks ago, I think we can defend the title. I know it is still early into the new season, but if you look at how the girls are playing with
chemistry and hunger to win, it will change your mind if you are doubting them," he said.
The former Kenyan international added that hard work and determination propelled them to the emphatic victory.
"People think we are getting these wins easily because of the depth of squad, but they don't know how hard these girls work. We have been preparing for this game since Monday in
Kisumu and that shows you how serious we are," said Ojukwu.
In Nairobi, Warriors moved joint top of the table champions KPA.
