Basketball: Lady Bucks upbeat ahead of KBF Premier League opener against Zetech

Kisumu Lady Bucks will be seeking to put behind their disappointing 2021 season performance when they kick off the 2022 Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Women’s Premier League with a match against Zetech Sparks at Manyatta Arabs on Saturday.

Lady Bucks performed poorly last season where they finished last but head coach Dave Michael said he is looking for a fresh start.

Speaking to the Standard Sports, Michael said they have roped in new players whom he expects will help the team get positive results.

“Our goal this season is to finish among top eight. We have done some recruitment who we are going to rely on for a better season compared to the last one,” said Michaels.

The tactician however said they are still experiencing the same problems they had last season including lack of playing ground and finances.

“Currently, we have no training ground. We have not been able to get any ground from the regional schools. Efforts to talk to the County Government for help has been unfruitful because we have been promised but seen no progress yet.”

“Furthermore, we are still a self-sponsored club who depend on well-wishers. All that said, we are still looking for good performance this season,” explained the coach.

Lady Bucks have signed seven new players.

The seven include Ann Werimo from University of Nairobi, Cynthia Atieno from Kisumu Polytechnic, Cindy Phylis from Kisii University, Juliet Omollo from Kenyatta University and Maseno University trio of Casey Wairimu, Carol Mwende and Lavender Faith.

In Nairobi, Equity Bank will begin their championship campaign with a clash against African Nazarene University (ANU) on Sunday at the Nyayo Gymnasium.

ANU defeated Eldonets 61-52 in their women's basketball premier league opener last weekend and face a stern test against the former champions Equity who are seeking to reclaim the national title.
