Buruburu Girls and Highway are the new Makadara sub-county girls and boys basketball champions.

Buruburu, who are also the regional champions, thrashed perennial rivals Our Lady of Mercy Girls 63-7 in a one-sided tie yesterday at Aquinas High School. On the other hand, Highway were forced to work harder against Aquinas, before winning 34-25.

Teresa Kedit and Stacey Ongwae led Buruburu's onslaught as they punished Our Lady of Mercy. Kedit topped the charts with 18 points, while Ongwae had 16 as they helped their side to retain the title.

Buruburu hit the ground running and had no issues settling down.

They dominated the first quarter with much comfort as they won 23-1. Our Lady of Mercy players then tightened their defence, which resulted in a low-scoring second period that saw them score three points, while Buruburu had two.

The fruitless quarter served as a wake-up call for Buruburu, who regained their footing to take the third 17-1. They surged on to in the final quarter, winning 21-2 and extend their reign for one more year.

In the boys' contest, Dennis Merunga and Mohammed Ali led Highway's battle against Aquinas. The finalists will compete in the Northern Sub-Region.
