Kenyans bag medals in Trinidad

Kenyan athletes put up a stellar performance at the Commonwealth Youth games in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday night as they bagged four medals.

Nancy Cherop and Josephat Kipkirui smashed Commonwealth Youth games records in 1500m finals to bag Kenya the first medals.

Cherop clocked 4:12.38 to shutter a seven-year record held by Scottish Erin Wallace recorded on her way to bagging gold.

As if that was not enough Josephat Kipkirui bagged yet another gold with another games record after clocking 3:37.66.

"I started the race well and along the way I felt like I should just push my body further. I didn't even know I had broken the record, I was just told at the finish line. I am so happy that I won the race despite high humidity in this city," Kipkirui said.

In the same race Janet Chepkemoi and Andrew Kiptoo bagged silver.

"We promised to deliver medals when we left home. We didn't know which one but all we wanted was to win and we did just that,"Kiptoo said.

Kenya's General Team manager and former athlete Janet jepkosgei lauded Kenya's team for a good performance in the event.

"We are very happy for the team. These young athletes have pushed themselves beyond the limits and in the end they did us proud," Jepkosgei said.

Elsewhere Titus Maundu won silver medal in the discus for athletes living with a disability.
