Loroupe, Kosgei mentor participants in Moi Girls Kapsowar Charity and Conservation Run

Hillary Kipkoech and Naomi Chebet are the winners of the third edition of Moi Girls Kapsowar Charity and Conservation Run held in Elgeyo Marakwet County on Saturday.

Kipkoech clocked 28.32.3 to lift the hotly contested men's category while Chebet timed 31.55 to win the women's race.

Pamela Kosgei (16.29.22) and Simon Maiuwa (14.04.93) were the women and men's 5km champions in that order.

The race sponsored by Skyward Express airline was graced by former and current world beaters among them three times World Half Marathon champion Tegla Loroupe and Olympic silver medalist Bridgid Kosgei who mentored students and participants who took part in the contest.

Other high profile guests included former double world cross country junior champion Viola Kibiwott, Sally Kaptich and Sharon Cherop.

"The objective of the race is to raise funds for the needy students in the area. It is also advocating for sustainable actions on climate change," Skyward Express Sales Executive Beatrice Manyala told Standard Sports.

"We are glad that Loroupe, Kosgei and other Kenyan greats came on board to help motivate the needy students, telling them that something good can come out of them no matter their current situation in life," Manyala underlined.

The race which was contested by over 120 athletes, both local and international, targeted to raise Sh2.5 Million to bridge the Sh9 Million fees areas needed to fund the students.

"So far, 51 students have benefited from the proceeds of the race, funds realised in the first two editions covered their school fees," Manyala explained.

In order to support sustainable actions on climate change, 15000 trees were planted ahead of the run in several schools in the county among them Moi Girls Kapsowar, Moi Boys Kapsowar, St. Peter Marakwet Boys, Kapkoros Girls and Chebara Boys high schools.
