Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich on Sunday won her second consecutive Chicago Marathon women's title with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 18 seconds.

Ruth, 28, built up an early lead and had established an astonishing 3 minutes 42 seconds advantage over the chasing pack by the halfway point.

Through 40 kilometers of the 42.1-kilometer race, Chepngetich was on pace to break the world record of 2:14:04 set by countrywoman Brigid Kosgei in 2019, also in Chicago.

"I wanted to break the world record ... but I'm happy," she said. "Next time, I will not miss it."

American Emily Sisson finished second in 2:18:29, breaking the American record of 2:19:12 set by Keira D'Amato in Houston on January with Kenya's Vivian Kiplagat third in 2:20:52.

Sisson, 30, ran her first mass marathon since dropping out of the Tokyo Olympic Trials as a pre-race favorite.
