World Under-20 champ Chepkoech shines in steeplechase at national meet

World Under-20 champion Jackline Chepkoech was in top form, winning the women’s 3,000m steeplechase final as the three-day National Championships ended at Kasarani Stadium yesterday.
Chepkoech, who was representing Central, showed her intention by leading the pack with three laps to the bell to win the race in 9:26.14 ahead of Celliphine Chespol of Kenya Prisons Service who timed 9:31.11 while Caren Chebet representing National Police Service, was third in 9:31.60.
“After this victory, I want to improve on my speed endurance with an aim of performing well at the Africa Senior Championships as well make the team to the World Championships,” said Chepkoech, who is coached by Patrick Sang in Kaptagat.
Former World Under-20 champion in 5,000m Beatrice Chebet was in top form as she dominated the women’s 5,000m final. Chebet, who was representing the National Police Service, won the race in 15:30.20 ahead of her fellow policewoman Carolyne Nyaga (15:32.20) with KDF’s Neptune Jepleting third in 15:38.40.
“I hope to qualify for more championships after this win, the Africa Championships in Mauritius will give me another opportunity to wear the national colours,” Chebet said.
Africa’s 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala easily won the men’s 100m final clocking 10.03.
In the women’s category, Maxmilah Imali from National Police Service set a new national record of 11.35 which is subject to ratification.
Uganda’s Jacinta Nyamahunga was second in 11.57.
