Kenya Prisons Athletics Championships: Chepngetich, Yosei shine at Prisons event

Charles Yosei won the 10000m final race to signal his intention of competing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as the annual Kenya Prisons Athletics Championships started at Kasarani Stadium yesterday.

Yosei formed the leading pack alongside Geoffrey Korir, Wilfred Kimitai, Cornelius Kangogo and Elizah Thiga before flooring his opponents to win the event in 28:56.4.

Korir stopped the clocked in 28:56.8 with Kimitai coming third in 29:08.6.

Peter Emase, the defending champion faded to seventh position in 30.09.8.

“It’s feel great to win the title, it will motivate me to perform well as I hope to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham later in the year,” said Yosei.

Prisons is using the championship to pick a team to represent them at the National Athletics Championships cum Trials for African Championships slated for April 28-30 at Kasarani Stadium.

The continental showpiece is set for June 8-12 in Reduit, Mauritius.

In the other final of the day, Boaz Kiprugut claimed the men’s 1500m final in 3:43.9 with Shadrack Ngumbau finishing second slot in 3:44.5

World marathon champion Ruth Chepngetich announced her arrival in the Prisons Service with an easy victory in the women’s 5000m finals.
