Netherlands' Sifan Hassan has broken the women’s 10,000 metres World Record by 10.63 seconds after crossing the finish line first at Continental Tour Meet in Hengelo, Netherlands.

The Ethiopian-born runner clocked 29 minutes, 6.82 seconds, eclipsing compatriot Almaz Ayana’s record of 29 minutes, 17.45 seconds set in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“Wow to run this world record here today in Hengelo is something I could only dream of. It’s the perfect confirmation of the hard work we’ve put in getting ready for Tokyo,” Hassan told World Athletics after the historic feat.

"It's the perfect confirmation of the hard work we've put in getting ready for Tokyo. I am so happy to share this record in front of my Dutch fans. I am so happy,” she added.
