Former Manchester United, City, West Ham and Juventus striker Carlos Tevez had to abandon Boca Juniors’ Argentine Primera Division match against Newell’s Old Boys on Sunday, February 21 after news his adoptive father had died.

Segundo Raimundo Tevez, who had surgery on his neck at the start of 2020 spent 45 days in the Intensive Care Unit after contracting Covid-19.

He beat the virus but unfortunately, it left him with a myriad of health problems.

According to The Sun, doctors warned the Tevez family of the man’s slim survival chances, prompting the football star to reveal to his children their grandfather was not going to make it.

"Unfortunately, my old man has no chance. It is a very difficult time for my whole family. I think I have won 29 titles in my career. This is very difficult for me. Unfortunately, my old man has no chance and to be a father, to explain to my daughters about their grandfather, it's a very difficult situation for everyone," Tevez said.

Tevez’s father was soon back in the hospital, which left the Argentinian distressed during most Primera Liga matches.

"I have different emotions. At times I am well and other times I go and cry during the half-time break. I can't explain it. These are difficult times. I go and visit my father and then I have to be strong to play football," Tevez said last year.

Boca Juniors sent their condolences to the Tevez family through social media:

“Boca Juniors mourns the death of Don Segundo, Carlos' father, and are thinking of the Tevez family and their friends at this time of so much pain and sadness. Stay strong…” they tweeted.
