St Anthony triumph as Kapkolel rout Namanguna

Kenya champions St Anthony registered an inspiring 2-0 victory over Burundi’s Eduntiant in a boys’ football match of East African Secondary Schools Games in Bujumbura, Burundi.

The victory offered Kenyans hope of winning the trophy for the second time in 11 years.

St Anthony are the only boys’ team from Kenya to lay their hands on the trophy after they won the inaugural event in Nairobi in 2002.

In girls’ hockey, Kenyan champions Kapkolei proved that they are mature enough to play at international level with 8-0 rout of Namanguna of Uganda in a one-sided match played at Tempete Cercle yesterday.

Ugandan girls’ put up a spirited fight in bid to contain the more experienced Kenyans but lack of technical understanding of the game was a big let down.

Lilian Cheruiyot showed Kapkolel the way, scoring five goals in 18th, 34th, 48th, 69th and 70th minutes during the match.

 Close range

Caren Karimbi opened floodgates when she dribbled past Namanguna defenders and score from close range just after three minutes.

Sheila Cheptoo (15th), Purity Tot (43rd) and Pascaline Cheruiyot (62nd) contributed one goal each for the winners.

Former champions Friends School Kamusinga of Kenya were held to a barren draw by Kololo of Uganda in a boys’ hockey match yesterday.

Boys’ hockey is played on league format at is featuring six teams namely: Lenana, Kamusinga and St Anthony all of Kenya and City High, St Mary’s Kisubi and Kololo of Uganda.

Meanwhile, Burundi Government has praised the conceipt of East African Secondary Schools Championships saying they help identify and nurture talent at early stage.

Severin Buzingo, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Teaching, Crafts, Professional Teaching and Literacy, said many national teams and clubs have benefitted immensely from the Championships by virtue of tapping talent.
