Manchester United key midfielder Ander Herrera, is set for a lucrative new four-year £180,000 per week. This is a move to ward off other European’s big spenders landing the Spaniard’s signature.

Herrera who won the club’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, voted for by fans, last month, has become Jose Mourinho’s favorite in his first season at the club - According to the Sky Sports.

And United are keen to reward him for his all-action displays by doubling his £90,000-a-week wages.

Boss Mourinho sees Herrera, who cost £29million from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2014, as a leader and a key figure in his plans; and he could also make the 27-year-old new captain.

Other captaincy options include centre-back Chris Smalling, but his long-term United future is also in some doubt.

Ecuadorian full-back Antonio Valencia who captained the side in the Europa League final victory over Ajax last month, is in the frame too.
