Barcelona legend Carles Puyol shared pictures online of some nasty-looking injuries after he smashed through a glass wall while trying to return a ball in a game of padel.

Padel is a popular racquet sport in Spain which is seen as a combination of tennis and squash, and points are often fast-paced and frantic.

Puyol was playing against his wife Vanessa Lorenzo having recently returned from holiday, and shocked his followers on Instagram by posting a picture of the smashed glass along with his arm and leg covered in blood.

He also included a caption which read "One day will I learn to relax?" along with an embarrassed face emoji.

Luckily he didn't seem to have suffered any serious wounds and is seen smiling in the picture.

A number of high-profile ex-teammates reacted to the pictures. Luis Figo said "you are very strong", while Manchester City's Aymeric Laporte aimed a cheeky dig by posting "Excuses for not playing against me! Get well soon."

Puyol was known throughout his playing career for his bravery and no-nonsense attitude, and he rarely shirked a tackle or physical battle.

He made 593 appearances in 15 seasons for the senior Barcelona team having come through their academy and won six La Ligas, three Champions League titles and two Copa del Reys with the club.

He also won 100 caps for Spain and helped guide them to the European Championship in 2008 and World Cup in 2010, making him one of the most decorated players in the country's history.

It was recently reported he had been offered the position of general manager at Barcelona, which would see him in a role supporting head coach Ernesto Valverde.

Puyol also revealed in an interview with TV3 that he had twice turned down Barcelona's bitter rivals Real Madrid while he was playing.
