Gunners are keeping track of developments with PSG, Monaco and Chelsea also interested in England talisman

Arsene Wenger is ready to smash Arsenal’s wage structure to bring in a stellar signing like Wayne Rooney.

The Arsenal hierarchy will back Wenger not just in terms of big money for transfers but also for contracts and they are capable of competing to sign Rooney.

Gunners boss Wenger’s top earner is Theo Walcott on £90,000-a-week-plus and Arsenal can push their boundaries well beyond £150,000-a-week for the right player.

Rooney, 27, is out of favour at Manchester United and has been targeted by Paris Saint Germain, Monaco and Chelsea but Arsenal are watching developments and the England striker’s name has been discussed.

Arsenal have a big hit-list of transfer targets with Wenger having £70m-plus at his disposal thanks to the club’s new commercial deals with Emirates and kit makers Puma.

They have been watching and tracking Stevan Jovetic for months but the Fiorentina striker is leaning towards staying in Italy now Juventus have come in for him.

Arsenal have also looked at Real Madrid superstar Gonzalo Higuain while Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke is another potential target, especially if he does want to leave.

Arsenal also wants a centre half with Swansea’s Ashley Williams the most likely, with him fitting the mould of a British player who can be a character in the dressing room.

It now looks as if QPR keeper Julio Cesar is their most likely option as he is available for a knock-down fee as the relegated club want his £70,000-a-week contract off the wage bill.

But Rooney would clearly be a name to excite Arsenal fans and yet they face massive competition with French clubs PSG and Monaco ready to blow everyone out of the water.

PSG are ready to pay Rooney around £300,000-a-week and Monaco are also deadly serious but it remains to be seen whether he would fancy France.

But Chelsea are keen while Arsenal are now in a situation where they can compete if they choose and Wenger is an admirer.

It would also represent an irony if Arsenal could snatch Rooney just 12 months after selling Robin van Persie to Manchester United.
