Scientists have given a bleak update on where they think the next global pandemic could come from.

According to experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mankind needs to be wary of a yeast-like fungus.

One expert has likened Candida Auris to a "creature from the black lagoon".

Gloomy scientific studies say that fungus would almost certainly be fatal if it entered the bloodstream.

Imperial College epidemiologist Johanna Rhodes said: "One of the things that makes Candida auris so scary is the fact it can linger on inanimate surfaces for long periods and withstand whatever you throw at it."

Its resistance to drugs could make it deadly in the event of an outbreak, she said.

As a result it has been likened to the Black Death.

The CDC's Dr Tom Chiller said: "It is a creature from the black lagoon. It bubbled up and now it is everywhere."

Scientists are warning that the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the need to invest in preventing and trackling infectious pathogens.
