End fixation with road construction

Perhaps it is time that a moratorium was placed on the use of public funds on construction of roads. Much as roads are an important infrastructure in the economic development of the country, we cannot keep tying down most funds on roads only.

The other significant areas of development such as education, health and water supply also need to be looked at. Provision of clean drinking water is important to elevating this country into a middle income status by 2030.

Take for example the allocation of funds from the Treasury, to the Infrastructure Ministry for road construction.

There is also allocation from the National Constituency Development Fund whose Patron is an MP which prioritizes the construction and repair of rural roads!

In the Kisii region where I come from, tea farmers are even levied a fee by the Kenya Tea Development Authority for the repair of roads! There is simply too much allocation of funds for construction of roads.

These allocations create room for the mis-appropriation of funds. Let the county and national governments and CDF funds go to other projects as well.

Kenya, at this stage in its development, needs a reliable, sustainable and clean water system so the country can move to the next level of the envisioned Vision 2030.
