The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union has warned against what it called unlawful threats by Kiambu County to dismiss striking doctors.
On Friday, the union said the county was defying a court order upholding the doctors’ right to strike and warned continued intimidation could trigger a nationwide escalation.
Medical services across Kiambu County have been disrupted since doctors began striking on Tuesday, citing the county government’s failure to resolve long-standing grievances.
KMPDU National Chairman Dr Abi Mwachi said the strike followed delayed promotions and punitive measures against doctors who raised concerns with the administration.
“This is not just a labour dispute; it is about justice and public health. Threatening healthcare workers who are legally protected is unlawful and puts lives at risk,” said Secretary-General Davji Atellah.

Doctors in Kiambu are demanding timely promotions and adequate medical insurance, which the union said are legal entitlements.
The union accused the county of ignoring the court order and failing to engage in meaningful talks.
“We met our colleagues and saw their resolve to fight for a functional health system,” said Atellah.
He called on the county to stop issuing threats, respect the court ruling and begin negotiations in good faith.
“We are ready to act decisively to protect our members. Doctors across the country are watching,” added Atellah.
