Car and General engineers are rebuilding a 14,000cc engine, which has been working for the past 44 years at a cement factory.
Spare parts were sourced from the Cummins engine plant at Columbus in the US. Randall Truter, the Cummins Workshop Manager, said, “Repairing a 44-year-old engine is an unusual task for our technicians, but they have taken it in their stride.”
The facility was constructed and equipped at a cost of Sh50 million at the Car and General premises in Nairobi.
This has enabled the company’s staff to rebuild the complete range of Cummins engines including high horsepower units driving generators with an output of up to 3,300 kVA and engines of up to 2,500 horsepower.
The workshop has been restructured recently with safety and quality control processes put in place to bring it to the level of any Cummins workshop in the world.
