Mwiria calls for evaluation of university course to enhance attainment of vision 2010
The Assistant Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology Dr. Kilemi Mwiria has joined forces in fighting for accessible, relevant and quality education in the current higher education system.
Speaking during the installation ceremony of Daystar University's 3rd Vice-Chancellor Dr. Timothy Wachira, the Assistant Minister stated the importance of access to education, disclosing that the Ministry would have exemptions of duty on educational material, so that education is made affordable to all. He also said strategy needs to be put in place to ensure that private universities cater for even those who spillover from public university intakes.
Given the recent debates on relevance of university courses, Mwiria called on universities to develop strategic programmes especially in science related courses and reviewing them in line with changing market demands and national aspirations. He decried the current duplication of courses in universities, highlighting the need to diversify programmes in order to remain relevant. He added that university education also needs to be evaluated not just by the popularity the institution has, but on its facilities, student enrolment and quality of teaching staff.
"We need to present data and information on our graduates. Universities need to be kept accountable for the employment status of its graduates " he said.
