An aspirant for the Mt Elgon Parliamentary seat claims his life is in danger after allegedly being physically assaulted by the incumbent Fred Chesebe Kapondi on Saturday.

According to Patrick Chemosit, he sustained serious head injuries after the MP and a handful of his supporters attacked him.

Chemosit, who wants to unseat Kapondi during the 2027 elections, was heading home in his car after attending a burial ceremony at Sacho village when he was attacked at Kapkateny village.

It is claimed that Kapondi, who also attended the burial, had his entourage trail Chemosit, blocking his vehicle before he ordered “goons” to assault him.

“The MP alighted from his vehicle, drew out his pistol and instructed his goons, about 15, and armed with crude weapons, to attack me,” said Chemosit.

His driver, Francis Kiboi, was wounded on the left hand. Both sought treatment at Bungoma Hospital.

Chemosit believes the MP was not happy that he had criticized his development record at the funeral.

“I spoke before him and was wildly cheered by the crowd, a large number that followed me when I left. I think that annoyed him. We know he always resorts to violence when he senses defeat,” said Chemosit.

Kopsiro Sub County Police Commander Julius Kiptoo said the Kapondi and Chemosit have been summoned to record statements today.

“Yes the incident indeed happened, and we are investigating the matter, which we link to political differences,” said Kiptoo.

Kapondi has not responded to phone calls or text message.
