Hundreds of Kenyans have filled the newly commissioned Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County ahead of the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations, marking a historic first for the region.

The 12,000-seater stadium, which has been the focus of national attention in recent days, was nearly full by press time, with our reporter on the ground indicating that some attendees began arriving as early as 5 a.m. to secure seats.

Security has been significantly heightened, with a heavy police presence and thorough screening of all entrants into the venue.

President William Ruto is expected to lead the day's celebrations, themed around the blue economy, a sector seen as key to unlocking the country's aquatic potential.

He will be joined by his Deputy Kithure Kindiki, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who are all slated to address the crowd.

This marks the first time Homa Bay County has hosted a national event of this magnitude, shining a spotlight on the region and underlining growing calls for investment in Kenya's water-based economic sectors.

Madaraka Day is marked every 1st of June every year, to commemorate the day in 1963 when the country attained internal self-rule (self-governance) from British colonial rule.
