A man has been charged with destroying his mother-in-law's car in Kakamega.

Makwanya Alumasi pleaded guilty before Kakamega Senior Resident Magistrate Sylvia Wayodi to the charge of destroying Lilian Terwa's car.

According to the charge sheet, Alumasi unlawfully damaged Sh35,000 rear windscreen of the vehicle belonging to Terwa on April 6 in Nala.

Pleading guilty to the offence, he told the court that he was angry after his mother-in-law assaulted him.

The accused told the court that the incident happened when he had gone to recover items his wife had taken to her parent's home against his consent.

"Her daughter (the wife) ransacked my house and took away my valued items. She took them to her mother and left nothing in the house, which was why I went to their home to get them back," said Alumasi.

"Your honour, it is at this point that I got so angry, picked a stone and hit her car," he said.

In mitigation, Alumasi said the issue was a family matter that would have been sorted out amicably.

He further said that he sorrowful but could not raise the money to replace the windscreen.

State lawyer Emily Owora told the court that Alumasi was a first-time offender and a lenient sentence should be served against him.

The trial magistrate directed the prosecution team to present a pre-sentencing report to her before she could make judgment on April 18.
