Rugby: Shujaa and Lionesses to face Portugal and Russia in Madrid 7s

Kenya 7s and Lionesses return to action today (Saturday) for the Madrid 7s International Tournament’s second leg in Spain.

Shujaa will have five matches at the round-robin stage with the addition of Chile who are expected to feature in the two-day tournament.

Shujaa will kick start their campaign with a tie against Portugal at 1:06 PM (East African Time) before facing USA at 4:34 PM.

Kenya will then face hosts Spain in their final match of the day at 7:18 PM.

On Sunday, Shujaa will face new entrants Chile at 1:20 PM EAT and will conclude their round-robin campaign against last weekend’s winners Argentina at 3:42 PM.

Kenya finished second to Argentina last weekend during the Madrid 7s first leg as Lionesses finished fifth.

The Innocent Simiyu coached side fell 21-14 to Argentina in the men’s final. They had earlier defeated Portugal 36-5, USA 36-5, Spain 19-5 before losing 21-7 to the Argentines in pool play.

For Kenya Lionesses, they will once again start off with a clash against Russia before tackling Poland and USA on Saturday. On Sunday, Felix Oloo’s charges will play France and host Spain.

The women’s team, Lionesses, lost all their fixtures as they finished fifth out of five teams in action. Felix Oloo’s charges lost 41-0 to Russia, 63-5 to France, 29-7 to USA, 10-7 to Spain and 15-7 to Poland before losing the fifth place playoff 12-10 to Spain.

The tournament is sponsored by World Rugby in preparation for the Tokyo Games is organized by the Spanish Rugby Federation (FER).

The top two teams after the round-robin phase are expected to face off in the finals while the third and fourth-placed teams will meet in the third-place playoffs. The bottom-placed teams will play the fifth-place play-offs.
