Solskjaer insists he won't buy players to save his Man United job

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he will not sign short-term fixes to protect his Manchester United job.

Solskjaer is dealing with an injury crisis, with seven players out, including first-choice centre midfield duo Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

Former United skipper Gary Neville said ex-team-mate Solskjaer needs to sign players this month to safeguard his position, with his job under threat.

But Solskjaer said he will not bring in players just to save his own skin and will always put United ahead of his own interests.

“No, not at all,” said Solskjaer. “I'm not going to protect myself. I'm going to do what's best for the club, what I think and we feel is right for the club and I will never put myself before the club.

“For me there's no 'I' in this team and I could never, ever do that, that’s not me. I'm working for Manchester United, not for me. “It wouldn’t always be the worst thing you can do, to put a short-term fix in if it’s good for the group.

“But you wouldn’t put yourself in a situation where you’ve done something that you regret in 18 months’ time.

“We’ve got to do due diligence - character of players, quality of players, that are the right fit into this squad.”

Solskjaer also insisted he is strong enough to tell United executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward of the need to buy, with some fans feeling he is happy to go forward with the existing squad.

Asked if he was forthright enough with Woodward, Solskjaer said: “Of course I am. Of course, we've got open discussions and of course, we’re open and honest.

“I have those conversations with Ed all the time and we're looking at how we're going to look in one month’s time and in the longer period.”

Despite that, Solskjaer has warned United fans not to expect much business in this month's window, ahead of Saturday's game at home to Norwich.

“We've still got the same thoughts we had a month ago,” said Solskajer. “We've got the players we have, we're working with the ones we have and, if something happens, we'll tell you.

“I can't say yes or no [to players coming or going] but I wouldn't expect many ins and outs.”
