FKF Elections: Nyamweya, ex-Vihiga Governor Akaranga join fray

Former Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya has said he is considering joining the race to be the next president.
This comes barely a day after former Vihiga County Governor Moses Akaranga also joined the race to challenge sitting president Nick Mwendwa.
Former FKF Western Branch chairman Andrew Amukowa and former Kenya Football Coaches Association deputy secretary-general Khamisi Shivachi both from Western have also thrown a hat into the ring for the position.
Nyamweya, who stood down at the eleventh hour -- paving the way for the election of Mwendwa in 2016 elections that had former football internationals Sammy Sholei and Dan Shikanda and Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier on the list -- said the management of Kenya’s top football organ is wanting and needs change.
In a press statement seen by Standard Sports, Nyamweya criticised the current regime for using his leadership as a yardstick to the strides they have made, terming it a failure and stating that the game is crying for better management.

He said four years since he exited the presidency, football standards have nose-dived.
“The Football Kenya Federation of today is not in the state that I left it when I handed over to Mwendwa three years ago. Over that period, I have taken a low profile though keenly observing and following events. What I have seen is unacceptable if Kenya is to grow as a football powerhouse,” Nyamweya said.
“During my tenure of office, we secured funding from Fifa to lay a modern artificial turf in Kisumu and the City Stadium. We conducted the elite Caf A Coaching License courses where 36 of our Local Coaches were awarded the prestigious Caf A Licences. The top tier league was well sponsored and the clubs were enjoying income from the partnerships.”
He added: “We built the brand National Super League as a stable and very competitive League, and being able to honour its financial obligations to the referees who received their pay for their services on time,” Nyamweya said.
Nyamweya served as Secretary-General (1996-2000) and President (2013-2016).
