Conor McGregor has broken down his defeat by Floyd Mayweather - and called for a rematch.

The former two-weight UFC champion was stopped by the boxing legend in the 10th round of their mega-fight in 2017.

Since then McGregor has fought just once, losing his challenge for the UFC lightweight title against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

In responding to a tweet about him catching Mayweather wirth a right hook, the Irishman said: "I spoiled it with the rush right hook here.

"The angle was made, he was in the dirt; I just had to set correctly into my feet and fire.

"Rushing the right hook I lost balance on my back hand. Great boxing fight! A rematch will be interesting no doubt."

McGregor will be free to return to the Octagon next month after being banned for six months for his role in the brawl that followed his defeat by Nurmagomedov.

He had been linked with a clash with Donald Cerrone but that now looks unlikely.

The former champion also took to Twitter to reflect on his defeat by Nate Diaz three years ago.

McGregor was submitted in the second round before avenging the loss in their rematch five months later.

He wrote: "It’s fascinating to me watching that loss back, then watching the comeback. We can always come back!

"Anyone can do something once, it’s can you do it twice is the question.

"That’s why I doubled up on the belts every time; any fool can do it once."
