Liverpool will lead the chase for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey after having a summer enquiry for the Wales international knocked back.

Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal that Reds manager Jurgen Klopp tried to sign the 27-year-old Gunner during the last transfer window.

That interest was rebuffed, but Klopp will be back in again for the Wales midfielder following the shock decision by Unai Emery and Arsenal to abort talks over a new contract.

That means the influential forward will be available on a free transfer next summer – although Arsenal would prefer to sell him in January and enable them to collect a fee.

But Ramsey is now likely to stay put at the Emirates until the end of the season when as a free agent he will be able to take his pick from some of Europe’s biggest sides.

Italian champions Juventus are watching the situation closely, while outgoing Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis will recommend that his new club AC Milan should step in.

But it is understood that Ramsey is excited at the opportunity of playing under Klopp at Anfield and would also link up again with another former Gunner in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is currently fighting back from a serious knee injury.

Liverpool would offer Ramsey the chance of returning to the Champions League and being involved once again in a Premier League title challenge.
