Volleyball league: Prisons off to winning start in Bomet

Kenya Prisons (men), Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) women and Kenya Prisons (women) made a winning start on the first day of the Kenya Volleyball Federation league second leg in Bomet County yesterday.
Seeking to make up for their dismal performance in the African Club Championship, Prisons men team beat their Mombasa counterparts 3-0.
Mombasa Prison warders were no match for their more illustrious counterparts as they went down 25-15, 25-20 and 25-24.
Prisons finished eighth at the Africa Championships that attracted 24 teams in Egypt early this month.
Prisons head coach Paul Muthinja was upbeat saying they are optimistic of a good show in the league.
“We are fresh from participating at the club championships, which brings together top-ranked teams from across Africa, and that in its own was a boost heading in today’s matches.
“We don’t know what to expect from our competitors since it’s a new season and in one way or the other, teams have recruited,” a cautious Muthinja said.
“We are keen to reclaim the title but this can only be achieved if we serve off with wins and that’s why we are going all out in search for a good performance here in Bomet,” he added.
In the women’s matches, KCB were pushed all the way before seeing off Kenya Defence Forces 3-2 in a thrilling match at Chepngaina Primary School grounds.
The bankers scored 26-24,25-22, 25-18,25-15 and 25-11 to win the hotly contested match.
Debutants DCI Ladies surprised Bungoma Bombers 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21) to send a strong signal to their rivals in the league.
In other matches, Prisons easily won their first match against Mombasa-based Ashton Ladies in straight sets of 25-15, 25-15, 25-17.
At the same time, men’s league champions GSU beat struggling Kericho County in straight sets.
In other men’s matches, Bungoma County will face Kericho County while GSU will entertain Forest Rangers.
Kenya Ports Authority square it out with NAKS, as Prisons Nairobi take on Kiambu County.
