Former Indianapolis Colts player Zurlon Tipton has died after accidentally shooting himself.

Tipton, a running back for the Colts, had taken his car to be serviced in Detroit on Tuesday when his gun discharged.

According to ESPN, his .45-caliber semiautomatic went off, firing a round into his stomach as he reached into his duffel bag.

Tipton was immediately taken to hospital and although the early signs were promising, his condition deteriorated as the day went on.

No one else was hurt in the accident.

The 26-year-old played for the Colts in 2014 and 2015

Tipton was arrested late last year for allegedly firing a weapon, with police finding two guns in his car at the time.

The 26-year-old starred for the Colts in the NFL in 2014 and 2015 having previously played for Central Michigan in college.

Former team-mates took to social media to express their sadness at the news.
