Kitale teams set for Copa Cola national contest

Kitale Youth and Kitale Young Starlets, all from Trans Nzoia, will represent Rift Valley region in the Copa Cola National Championships after winning their matches at Uasin Gishu Primary School in Eldoret. Kitale Youth beat Bomet 8-1 to lift the regional crown in the boys’ final.

Maxwell Kibet became the player of the day after he scored the fastest goal of the tournament and had five-assists.

His first fast goal in the 40th second of the first half signalled the Trans-Nzoia-based team was on the rampage from the start.

In the semi-final, Kitale Youth beat Boca Juniors from Nakuru 3-1 with goals scored by Erick Wafula in the 15th and 18th minutes and Issa Rashi in the 49th while Moses Gathongo struck a consolation in the 35th minute. The journey to semis was well executed when they beat Ujuzi from Kericho 2 - in preliminaries with goals from Erick wafula (21) and Ely Saeng (34).

It was a sweep for Trans-Nzoia-based teams in girls’ final where Kitale Young Starlets won slimly against their neighbours Cherang’any Startlets. Cynthia Barasa’s solitary goal in the 8th minute was enough to propel her team to play at national level.

Meanwhile, Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya has said awarding of tenders for construction of a world-class stadium in the county were at an advanced stage and the  work would start immediately the tendering process is completed.

At the same time, Mvurya pledged to kit the Mombasa region team before they travel for the nationals set for Kakamega next month.

In another related development, Mvurya has said the county will support Shimba Hills Secondary School as they prepare to defend the East and Central Africa Secondary Schools netball title next month to be held in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania.

The governor said the school has been flying the county’s flag high in sports and pledged to support the school’s netball and basketball girls' teams ahead of the regional championships.

Coach Philip Onyango, who handles both netball and basketball teams thanked the governor for the gesture and vowed to bring both regional trophies back to the county.
