Swimming Gala Attracts Thousands in Nairobi

Victoria Okumu of Gems Cambridge set a meet record as she clocked 2:39.25 to win the 200 Individual Medley Meter race during the Nairobi County Level 2 Swimming Championship that was staged at the Makini School Nairobi over the weekend.
Okumu said “It is fun swimming and am glad that I have set a meet record and will be representing Nairobi during the Nationals.”
Second overall in the category that was taken by girls aged between 14-15 was Ruchti Lucia of Otters who timed 2:43.14 followed by Seahorse’s Ambala Ahura.
In the 200 meter race for girl’s aged 16-years and over, it was Okumu’s namesake Virginia of Braeburn who clocked 2:49.58, Chantelle Kariuki of Seahorse followed in second place clocking 2:52.09 as Stephanie Ondiek of Kenyatta University timed 3:26.91 to emerge third overall.
The girls’ 100 meter race for those aged between 8-9 years was won by Smith Gina who recorded a time of 1:53.56, followed by Frantz Nyah who timed 1:55.98 as Macrine Kalombo clocked 1:56. 22 to finish third overall.
Sam Scott of HIS won the boys 100 meters category after clocking 1:27.43, RUSIN’s Shivo Erick followed in the second position after timing 1:34.78 as Bell Finlay of Arusha clocked 1:35.87 to return third.
In the 200 meter backstroke for boys aged between 10-11 years, Kibogo Samwel of Seahorse clocked 3:03.23 to win followed by Kamau Daniel who timed 3:11.83 as Xidi Nyangah clocked 3:13.34 to emerge third overall.
The 800 Meter Freestyle category for Girl’s aged between 12-13 years was won by Rachael Neema who timed 13:08.15 followed by Dhanjal Khusi of GEMS who clocked 13:39.96 as Ayugi Ericka of Karen School clocked 16:10.74 to finish third overall.
The Chairman of the Nairobi Region Patrick Muule said “As you can see, this time round we have a lot of fans supporting the swimmers; the swimmers are agile and ready to compete and represent Nairobi in the National fete.”
He added “We expect to have around 1000 swimmers competing in the National race, and from this number, Nairobi will produce about 500 swimmers.”
