Kenya Editors Guild urges state to set up media sustainability fund

This call comes at a crucial moment for media houses and journalists, highlighting the pressing need for support in navigating the challenges posed by digital transformation.

With digital disruptions wreaking havoc on media houses and journalists facing unprecedented economic challenges, KEG Chief Executive Officer Rosalia Omungo, underscored the urgent need for timely intervention.

During a senior editor training session on Cloud Computing organised by the KEG in collaboration with Huawei at Ole Sereni Hotel, Nairobi, Omungo addressed the grim reality of industry disruptions.

She shed light on the widespread layoffs and salary delays endured by numerous media professionals as a consequence.

"We're committed to stepping in early to help our members," Omungo stated, highlighting efforts to establish a ="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/entertainment/opinion/article/2001492140/the-long-walk-to-media-freedom-in-kenya&ved=2ahUKEwiS2a-FosmFAxVYVfEDHRVXBYcQxfQBKAB6BAgIEAE&usg=AOvVaw2EslBejE716HZ_SzjJRirP">media sustainability< fund to cushion media houses and journalists during tough times.

Emphasizing the importance of journalistic integrity, the CEO reiterated KEG's dedication to accurate reporting and fact-checking to combat misinformation.

"We won't stand for being channels of fake news," she said.

Radio Africa Digital Editor Francis Mureithi echoed Omungo's sentiments and highlighted the importance of journalists adapting to the changing landscape.

"Technology has disrupted the media landscape," Mureithi noted, highlighting the importance of collaboration with tech partners like Huawei to navigate challenges and leverage tools like artificial intelligence responsibly.

Oliver, CEO of Huawei Digital Power Eastern Africa Region, highlighted the potential of renewable energy to transform Kenya's energy sector. "Renewable energy is key to sustainability," he said outlining Huawei's initiatives in solar energy and electric vehicle charging.

The conference emphasized the vital role of media in shaping narratives and driving sustainable development.

As Kenya moves towards a digital future, partnerships between media organisations and tech companies like Huawei will be crucial in shaping the digital landscape.
