Renson Ingonga has been sworn in as the third Director of Public Prosecution in a Monday morning event at State House.

The event was attended by President William Ruto, Chief Justice Martha Koome, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Attorney General Justin Muturi among other top government officials.

According to President Ruto, Ingonga's success depends on the working relationship with his colleagues in the justice dispensation sector.

He has also vowed to give the ODPP the support needed in justice dispensation, saying Kenyans need accountability from all appointed to public offices.

"We will respect the independence of your office and provide the necessary support to deliver. You will face criticism. You will hear calls for greater transparency and accountability. I trust you will understand that in our democracy, Kenyans deserve the best," Ruto said.

Ruto appointed Ingonga as the new Director of Public Prosecutions in a Gazette notice dated September 20, 2023.

Ingonga will hold the position for eight years.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 157 (2) of the Constitution and in accordance with the procedure set out under section 8 (8) of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, 2013, I appoint Renson Mulele Ingonga as the Director of Public Prosecutions," the notice read in part.

Prior to his appointment, Members of Parliament unanimously approved Ingonga's nomination to the position.

Before his appointment, Renson was a Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecution in charge of the North Eastern region.

He now officially succeeds Noordin Haji who is at the helm of the National Intelligence Service as the Director General.

Haji succeeded Keriako Tobiko.
