Michael Karanga rules Kiambu course

Michael Karanga shuttered a 10-year-old Kiambu Golf Club course record on the final day of the Captain (CPA Mike Nyangi) 2023 prize.

Karanga, the comeback King, did it in style as he returned a final-day score of 10-under 72 to erase the earlier record by professional golfer James Karanga (his maternal grandfather) of -6-under set in 2013.

The -4 golfer has been on a record-breaking streak which has seen him break four-course records and win 13 out of the 17 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) titles in his pursuit for greatness. He also won the Ghana Open 2023 on his debut on the West African circuit.

“I want to shatter records and set new ones that will remain in place for a long time,” Karanga said.

In Karanga’s shadows was Fred Mwangi who combined 40 and 35 for a total of 73 points to take the overall combined second-placed title. Kiambu Golf Club chairman Phillip Ondieki led by example as he clinched men’s winner prize with 39 points, playing off handicap 20.

The men winner second prize went to another top club amateur Steve Kiaro playing off handicap 3, beating William Muguima on a countback score to Men’s winner third. 

Men winner fourth and fifth prizes were won by DG Wambugu and Njuguna Kimani respectively both on 36 stableford points.

Elite lady golfer Joyce Wanjiru shone in the ladies’ section, claiming the Lady winner prize on a score of 38 stableford points.

The Lady winner’s second prize went to Priscillah Githaiga, who had a score of 36 points while Patricia Mbugua was the Lady winner third on a score of 33 points.

Subsidiary prize went to Samuel Gituara on a score of 21 points, while Daniel Macharia took the Subsidiary winner second prize with 25 points.

The Guest Men winner prize was won by Emanuel Wekesa with a score of 39 points. John Muchunga was the Guest Men finished second with 36 points.

Best among the visiting lady golfers was Jescia Kimathi, who had a score of 33 points.

Wangui Kinyanjui took the Guest lady winner prize with a score of 29 points.

The sponsor winner prize went to Michael Mwiti who had a score of 40 points, Edward Mumira was the Sponsor winner second with 38 points and Jackie Muthoni came in third with 29 points.

Karanga was triple lucky bagging the Gross prize too. Nearest to the Line Men prize was won by Fred Mwangi. The nearest to Line Lady prize was won by Grace Githere.

First Nine winner prize went to Kimani Machiri with 21 points. Mwangi Ngibuini won the Second Nine prize with 20 points.

Scratch golfer Elvis Muigua returned a neat score of 36 points to lift the Junior prize, while FN Njagi won the former captain prize with 33 points.
