Alexis Sanchez and Edinson Cavani

Manchester United are weighing up the possibility of signing Edinson Cavani in the January transfer window - but are wary of repeating the mistakes made with Alexis Sanchez.

Cavani is out of contract at Paris-Saint Germain this summer and looks set to leave the club this month, with Atletico Madrid leading the chase for his signature.

Chelsea and Arsenal have also been linked with moves for the 32-year-old Uruguay striker, while United are reported to be among the clubs interested as they desperately need to reinforce their attacking options.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer missed out on top target Erling Haaland after the Norwegian hotshot signed for Borussia Dortmund earlier this month.

And the Red Devils' striking problems were compounded when Marcus Rashford suffered a double stress fracture in his back which will keep him sidelined for months.

Now United are pondering a move for Cavani having been offered the chance to sign him for around £12.6million this month, according to the ="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/01/23/manchester-united-tentatively-explore-option-move-edinson-cavani/?WT.mc_id=tmg_share_tw">Telegraph< .

The striker certainly has the pedigree to fill the goalscoring void at United, with Solskjaer's side having looked toothless in attack in their 2-0 defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Cavani has scored 351 goals in 577 club games for PSG, Napoli and other clubs, and 50 goals in 116 appearances for his country.

But he will be 33 next month and has made just 14 appearances for PSG this season, having been in and out of the team due to injury problems and a loss of form.

And the Telegraph claims United chiefs are unsure as they do not want to make the same expensive mistakes as they did with Sanchez.

Sanchez joined United from Arsenal for £30m in January 2018 on a whopping pay deal, but struggled with injuries and a drop in form, scoring just five goals in 45 appearances for the Red Devils.

The Chile forward joined Inter Milan on loan in the summer, but United are still contributing around £175,000 a week to Sanchez's £360,000-a-week wages, according to the Telegraph.
