Collins Injera ready to break record

When Kenya Rugby Sevens team takes to the pitch on Saturday at Twickenharm Stadium, London, the whole world will be watching at Collins Injera.

Only three tries stand between Injera's 227 and Argentina's Santiago Gomes' 230 tries in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

To make the occasion more memorable, Injera's mother and father left Nairobi to London just in time to watch their sons conquer the world.

Injera’s father  Dr Wilfred Emonyi did not hide his faith in the entire Kenya Sevens team.

"This has been one long journey and I think the boys deserve every little success that they have today," said Emonyi.

"We are happy and proud of Collins. The fact that we have had the opportunity to come all the way to watch them is an honour; we can only hope for the best as they take to the pitch," he added.

But Emonyi is not the only family member of Kenyan team in London, the team's kit sponsors Kenya Airways gave flew in family members of all the players to watch the London matches.

"We are very thankful to our sponsors KQ for recognising what we do on the pitch by flying in our family members here in London," said Kenya's captain Andrew Amonde.

"We were all given tickets for two to three family members. Some offered to bring in their parents while others have given the chance to close relatives, wives or girlfriends," added Amonde who spent Thursday afternoon on a lunch date with his spouse.

The team spent two hours at the Barn Elms Sports Centre along Queen Elizabeth Walk, London in a light Training Session.

"This is the Captain's run and the boys have spent adequate time sharpening their skills as we prepare for the games tomorrow," said Injera.

"Itwill be a very special occasion for me because it is here at Twickenharm that I scored my first IRB Sevens try eight years ago. When the games begin, I look forward to not only levelling the tries total but possibly setting a new record apart from winning the tournament," added Injera.

Injera's brother Humphrey Khayange who also plays a pivotal role in the Kenya Sevens team has so far bagged 156 tries in the World Rugby Sevens Series.

Kenya Sevens first match will be against Portugal at 11:52am Kenyan time before taking on Scotland at 2:58pm. Benjamin Ayimba's charges will then close their day one against France at 6:04pm
