Which university/college did you attend?

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

What did you study?

Bachelor of Education in English and English Literature. I originally wanted to be a high school teacher of English. It runs in my mother’s family.

What was your worst class?

The Friday afternoon classes, especially the ones that ended at 6pm. My best friend Celia and I loved going to Kengeles at The ABC Place on Fridays and we just wanted to get out and get ready for the party.

What was your best campus experience?

Clubbing. I stayed in a university hostel run by the nuns and at weekends, seven of us — all girls — would walk to the main road at night and catch a matatu to the petrol station opposite Carnivore. We would then contribute money for one taxi to drop us at Carnivore before 9pm so we wouldn’t have to pay entrance charges. We would dance the entire night and have only one drink because that was all we could afford. At 6am, half asleep and grumpy, we would catch those big dusty manyangas back to the stage near the hostel. Those were the late 1990s when the music kept you on the dance floor all night long.

Most embarrassing campus experience....

(Laughing). I fought with a nun. The head nun who ran the campus hostel where I stayed would get annoyed with me and my friends who would leave to go clubbing most weekends. I got into an argument with the Sister during dinner. I was so frustrated for being judged morally for just wanting to go out.

What was your dating experience in college?

I was in a relationship with my ex-boyfriend in Mombasa from the age of 16 and all through university. It was a long distance relationship.

Worst lecturer....

I really enjoyed my studies at CUEA. I can’t say there was a lecturer I hated.

The hottest guy in campus was....

I’d say no one. (I’m going to get killed for this!)

What do you know now that you didn’t know then?

That I should have appreciated my flat iron board tummy (sobs). I actually wished back then that I wasn’t skinny and mostly felt awkward about the way I looked. I have realised you just need time to grow: mind, body and soul. And you eventually learn to love the person you become despite your flaws.

If you could go back to college, what would you do differently?

Try be lot more sociable. I was still in my shy phase back in university. I bet everyone thought I was a snob when the truth is I felt a little out of place around the louder, more confident ‘cool kids’.

Biggest regret?

I used to go to the club wearing Tommy Hilfiger boxers under my jeans, which were worn a little low so you could see the elastic band and a short tank top, complete with a Hilfiger sweat shirt tied around my waist.
