As fun as trying new things is we should stop experimenting with skincare products (Photo: Courtesy)

As 2021 comes to an end, we need to appreciate all the beauty hacks we have learnt so far.

A big chunk of the year was spent indoors which gave us time to experiment with different routines. For sure, it wasn’t fun having to deal with the lockdowns but at least we can say we managed to do an overhaul of our self-care regimens.

As we anxiously await a new year, we look forward to learning even more ways to improve our lives but, that won’t be possible if we still hold on to the counterproductive routines we might have picked up.

To be honest, there are some routines that need to be buried and forgotten and these are some that you should consider letting go of as we hit a new year:

Weird DIY combinations

DIY-ing is a fun way of reinventing your beauty routine if you’re not a fan of store-bought products. There are many benefits found in Ayurveda formulas and you can benefit if you know your way around them.

However, I should mention that if you’re not a professional or aren’t really sure of what you are doing and what you’re combining, you should let it all go.

You will end up mixing toxic concoctions that can cause irreversible damage.

Useless trendy routines

The internet is a great place to learn new things from fashion all the way to hair care or skin care. Without it, we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to learn and share some of the ideas that turned our self-care game around.

Still, you will spot some over the top recommendations hiding underneath helpful content and maybe you’ve even experienced the damages caused by unnecessary regimens.

The only way to beat this is by doing enough research and staying away from fad routines.

Product pilling

There are thousands of beauty products marketed to us every day. It’s usually confusing to figure out the purpose of each product so you end up buying whatever you can and pilling it all on your hair or skin.

Before you add some extra items to your cart the next time you’re out shopping, read the labels and do some research on it to figure out whether it’s even needed.

Focus on the most important products and leave the rest because you will probably find that many of them do the same thing.

Ineffective routines

Our skin changes with age and there are times when it just doesn’t respond to particular products and regimens anymore.

You should give time to test whether a specific product or routine is working but in 2022, don’t allow yourself to be stuck with the same thing when it’s not working.

Unhygienic routines

Proper hygiene is the most basic requirement for any good routine. It’s what keeps issues like scalp infection and breakouts at bay.

Before the beginning of the new year, throw away any expired products and start embracing habits like regularly washing your makeup brushes, combs, manicure sets and other tools you use, if you haven’t been consistent.
