If you are not aware, there is a new movement out there where career mothers are striving their best to exclusively breastfeed their babies for six months. First, I want to say a big hats off to all the mothers out there who have managed to finish this challenging race. This is a journey that requires sheer persistence, patience and determination. It is not a race for the faint-hearted. Most men do not understand why women go to such extreme lengths, yet they can afford to buy formula milk. My hubby is one of these men. He cannot fathom why I have subjected myself to such a tedious lifestyle of pumping milk in the wee hours of the morning and storing it in the fridge. “Why do you subject yourself to such torture yet there is the option of formula or cow milk?” He always blasts me. Educated mothers know the myriad of benefits of breast milk as opposed to formula milk. That is why when they resume work from their maternity leave and are back to work, they go to crazy lengths to ensure that their babies continue enjoying breast milk even when they are at work. While others are taking a lunch break, I used to see my nursing colleagues dash to their cars to go and express milk. Any break time at their disposal was not for catching up on office idle gossip, but boosting their milk bank. As taxing as this journey of exclusive breastfeeding may be, I am going the whole hog. I have started storing my supplies in the fridge and my daily prayer is that Kenya Power does not play a 24 hour blackout on me. That will be disastrous for me. The wise men said that you should not cry over spilt milk, but I dare say that the only milk, you are justified to moan about is breast milk. That milk is so precious- it contains numerous antibodies that boosts a babies immunity, it contains just the right amount of every nutrient that a baby under six months needs, it is cheap and it requires minimal preparation (if you have a lousy house girl you will really dread formula preparation). For all men out there with wives who have gone the extra-ordinary mile, I think you need to not only give your full support, but also give them a super-treat because they are laying the best health foundation for your kids.
