A man dressed as a woman was arrested by Migori police in Awendo town.
In a shocking incident, the person being questioned for impersonation was dressed entirely in female attire and wore make-up to conceal his identity.
Jared Opiyo was dressed in a yellow dress and a short-sleeved denim top. However, he identified himself to the police officers as Sheila Bichange.
According to Awendo Sub-County police commander Mathias Pombo, they have yet to determine why the man was dressed as a woman and have launched an investigation to determine his motives.
During interrogation, the man claimed to be transgender. When he was asked to produce his identification card, he was discovered to be a 21-year-old man from Ndhiwa, Homa Bay county.
According to police reports, the man who was identified as a female impersonator claimed to have harboured female feelings since childhood, which explains his choice of attire.
"We have yet to determine why the man has been dressed as a woman. We want him checked out to see if he is truly transgender, as he claims," Pombo said.
The man was driving by the police station when he was stopped by a female officer who recognised him as not being a woman. He was made to undress at the Awendo police station, where officers discovered he was a man.
Residents wanted police to hand him over to them for lynching. According to them, the man dressed as a woman during the day and attacked people at night.
Resident John Ouma asked national government leaders to intervene.
"These are the same people who will be released and will come back to kill us," he said.
Police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowd that had gathered around the police station.
"We discovered he was a man after questioning him. We were able to apprehend him and are conducting investigations," Pombo said.
