Every day at the crack of dawn, these men and women in Kuria West, Migori County plunge into River Hibwa to fetch sand for sale.

They risk life and limb in the reptile-infested river in their bid to eke out an honest living. For each bucket they earn Sh10. On a good day, one can take home up to Sh500. Peanuts, yes, but worth much more than the slimy billions that the corrupt pocket every day. [Photos: Denish Ochieng/Standard]
